Obituary
Harold Morley Thompson was born in Kinistino on January 9, 1939 to Thorvald and Beatrice Thompson, baptized at Norden Lutheran Church and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Kinistino. He was raised on the family farm North of Kinistino along with his sisters Faye, Doreen and Joyce and attended Viking and Weldon schools.
Harold was an avid athlete who excelled in curling, fastball and was a member of a relay race team. Standing 6’4” and weighing 300 lbs. in his prime, Harold played fastball with the Viking Monarchs and was known as “Homerun Harold” by his fastball mates.
In 1971 Harold married Elsie and together they raised four sons: Kelly, Colin, Rick and Larry, and one daughter – Cindy. Harold assumed the family farm and maintained a successful life career as a farmer, farming with his eldest son, Kelly. He enjoyed being outdoors, feeding the birds and his “’pet” squirrels and spending time in their ever-expanding garden.
Harold was a “100% hometown boy”, committed to community. He dealt at the local Credit Union and faithfully supported the local businesses. He served on the Co-op board, the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool committee, Norden Lutheran Heritage Church, and the Zion Lutheran Church in Kinistino. Harold also helped build the Glen Mary curling rink and was a financial supporter of the Kinistino rink.
Commonly referred to as a “gentle giant”, Harold was known as a quiet and unassuming, good natured man who welcomed everyone with a warm smile and an attentive ear.
In 2007 Harold and Elsie retired from farming and moved into Kinistino. Due to failing health, Harold became a resident of the Jubilee Lodge in January 2016 where he received the best of care and regular visits from family and friends. The family wishes to thank the kind and caring professionals from the Kinistino Jubilee Lodge who made such a positive difference in his health and wellbeing and made him feel so at home in his final year.
On January 22, 2017, Harold passed away peacefully to his eternal home in heaven. He was predeceased by his parents Thorvald and Beatrice Thompson, and his sister Doreen Teichreb. He leaves behind his wife, Elsie, their children: Kelly and Laurie (nee Yuzik) Light; Colin and Joseline (nee Mercado) Light; Rick Thompson and Cristina Holguin-Pando; Cindy and Murray Koob; Larry and Laura (nee Sousa) Thompson; grandchildren: Terri (and Kurt) Margolis, Jerri Cameron, David, Donald and Braden (and Alicia Fiddler) Light, Drake Light, Carly, Haley and Jacob Thompson, Amy and Jesse Honch, Sarah and Landon Zanidean, Michael Koob, and great grandchildren, Kale and Lexie Margolis, Kane and Orion Cameron, Seth Zanidean, and Aurora Light, his sisters Faye (and Arnold) Holmquist, Joyce (and Del) Stanoffsky, Jake Teichreb, numerous nieces and nephews and many who knew and loved him.
