Obituary
Rudolph Joseph Bull was born April 17, 1927, to Jozef and Veronika Bull in Radosina, Czechoslovakia, and passed away peacefully on August 15, 2016 in Melfort, SK with family by his side. Rudy immigrated to Canada with his mother, arriving at Halifax’s Pier 21 in March of 1932 after traveling aboard the HMS Pennland. This was an exciting time for a boy not yet 5 years old. His Mom sent him for fresh-baked buns every morning, because she was sea-sick, and he always raved about how they smelled and tasted.
His Dad homesteaded within the boundaries of the current Pathlow Community Pasture. Then during the 1940’s they moved to the farm 4 miles south of Meskanaw. As a teenager and young man, he worked very hard on the farm and for neighbours cutting wood, baling, thrashing, etc. Rudy attended Ben Loyal School, and because of the multiculturalism in the area, learned to speak English, Hungarian, Ukrainian and Polish besides his native Slovak. He also completed two years of post secondary education in Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan.
Rudy used to tell a story about when his Dad and a neighbour were going to run off a batch, but for whatever reason the police showed up so the mash got thrown out to the pigs. The terrible squealing and reeling caused some concern to the Mounties, but it was explained as maybe some bad feed!
Rudy was a farmer growing grain and raising cattle. He also worked off the farm for W. Jeffrey Massey & Dodge in Meskanaw, at Coquet & Bourgault in St. Brieux, CAA Saskatchewan, and the Melfort Journal. He helped Frank Bourgault build the cultivator that started it all, designed especially for the rocky soil in the area. And man! Were there stones!
Rudy was involved with several different organizations during his lifetime, including Kinistino Rural Telephone Co., Ben Loyal School Board, St Brieux Lions Club, Local Snowplow Club, Keewatin Ski Resort, the Hudson Bay Route Association and Organic Crop Improvement Association. He also held various executive positions within other organizations– St.Brieux Credit Union, Bourgault Industries Ltd. Local #171 Melfort Royal Canadian Air Cadets, the Air Cadet League of Saskatchewan, Little Moose Parish, etc.
It was while he was a director for the School Board that he met Ginette. When the new teacher arrived at Ben Loyal in 1958, he was responsible for bringing firewood to the school. They were married on August 22, 1959 in St. Brieux, and moved into a two room house on the family farm.
As you can see, Rudy had many interests – he also loved to dance, ski, he was an avid reader, enjoyed travel and telling stories (and could he tell stories). He and Ginette have seen a lot of the world together many countries such as Europe, from one end of the United States to the other (Alaska to Florida and points in between), and all across Canada. One major highlight in his life was visiting Pier 21 in Halifax, and finding his name on the ships manifest.
He and Ginette were blessed with three children Monica, Mark and Martha. In 2012, they moved to Melfort. Unfortunately, Rudy’s health deteriorated, and he eventually moved to Parkland Care Facility where he entertained residents and caregivers alike with his stories.
Rudy was predeceased by his father and mother– Jozef and Veronika; son Mark; father and mother –in-law Henri and Jeanne Bandet; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law; aunts, uncles and cousins overseas.
He is survived by his wife of almost 57 years Ginette; daughters Monica (Dale) and Martha (Michael); grandsons Kyle (Amanda), Hudson and Lincoln; great granddaughters Madeline and Olivia; his sister Betty Lewicki; brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and too many friends to name.
Memorial contributions in memory of Rudy may be directed to Alzheimer Society and/or Sask. Heart & Stroke Foundation.
