Obituary
David Harold Woods was born April 15, 1937 to Harold and Alice Woods in St. Thomas, Ont. He spent his early years there until moving to Calgary in 1951. He was a sensitive, creative boy whose teachers thought he spent “far too much time daydreaming and drawing pictures” so he left school shortly after that and began to work. He was a meticulous worker who appreciated details and quality. He liked to design, create and work with his hands. This led him to various trades including flooring, construction, auto body mechanic, sign painting, oil field construction and building maintenance. He enjoyed hunting and particularly liked the time spent living in the far north. His retirement years were spent enjoying nature, tending his flower gardens and designing and constructing bird houses.
David struggled with mental health issues his entire life. Debilitating depression and anxiety contributed to years of addictions, suicidal thoughts and unstable life choices. He spent most of the time living inside his own head, unable to cope with the world and the people in it. His final struggle was with diabetes and Alzheimer’s to which he succumbed peacefully November 23, 2020. He finally experienced true happiness as he entered the joy of heaven. He may have had little peace on this earth but he had peace with God because he was forgiven. It was not because he had earned it, but because he had made the decision to trust, that “God so loved the world that He gave his only Son, that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life” (The Bible).
David is survived by Joan Woods; his children, Esther (Tim) Forsyth, Louise (Herb) Wright, Ryan (Rhonda Hough); his grandchildren Baxter (Forsyth), Levi, Carter, Alyssa (Wright),Colby, Emmalee (Woods), Kayge, Sadie (Carter); his siblings, Lois (Bill Taylor), John (Neva) Woods, Tim (Wendy) Woods and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Danny Woods and his daughter in law Trina Woods.
God hath not promised skies always blue,
Flower strewn pathways all our lives through;
God hath not promised sun without rain,
Joy without sorrow, peace without pain.
But God hath promised strength for the day,
Rest for the labour, light for the way,
Grace for the trials, help from above,
Unfailing kindness, undying love.
God hath not promised we shall not know
Toil and temptations, trouble and woe;
He hath not told us we shall not bear
Many a burden, many a care.
God hath not promised smooth roads and wide,
Swift, easy travel, needing no guide;
Never a mountain, rocky and steep,
Never a river turbid and deep.
