Obituary
It is with sadness that the family of Stan announces his passing on Tuesday, June 17. He will be greatly missed by Jean, his loving wife of 56 years. Stan was a devoted father to Kathryn (Paul) Mortensen and Connie (Mark) Volk and grandchildren Jillian, Jeannette and Taylor. He was predeceased by his beloved grandson Riley in 2013.
Stan was born in Fort MacLeod, AB to Henry and Alice Beacom in 1927 and the family moved soon after to Calgary where he received his elementary and high school educations. In 1945 he enrolled in the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Alberta. He obtained his B.Sc. with distinction in 1949 and then his M.Sc. in Animal Science in 1951. He accepted the position of Animal Husbandman at the Melfort Research Station where he initiated and developed animal nutrition programs. In 1957 Stan and Jean moved to Montreal where Stan was to undertake work to obtain his Ph.D., which he accomplished in 1959.
Stan and Jean then returned to Melfort where he continued his programs. In 1966 he was appointed Director of the Research Station at which he continued until retirement in 1990, after which he spent a year at the University of Saskatchewan in the Animal Sciences Department lecturing. He then joined Royal LePage Realty in 1992 and thoroughly enjoyed his work there which lasted for 17 years.
He received many honours and awards during his career including a fellowship from the Agricultural Institute of Canada. He was involved with the Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists, the Meflort Agricultural Society and the Melfort Masonic Lodge.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Strydom and the staff at Parkland Place for the loving care they showed to Stan.
Service of remembrance was held at St. James Presbyterian Church on Friday, June 20, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Dave MacPherson officiating. Interment followed at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
