Obituary
Elmer Iris Irvine was born on February 16, 1933 in his parents’ home on their farm in Pleasant Valley, Saskatchewan. His parents were Arthur Melville (Mel) and Pearl Irvine. He was the third of four children.
Elmer attended Melinda School and then took a motor mechanics course at Saskatoon Technical Collegiate. While in Saskatoon he worked as an usher at the Broadway Theater. He also spent a brief time working at a garage in Peace River until he returned home to farm with his father. It was there he met his future wife, Nada Lensen, who had accepted a teaching position in 1951 at Melinda School and happened to be boarding with his parents.
After Elmer and Nada married in 1953, they farmed for a short time before moving to Empress, Alberta. Elmer spent the summers working on an irrigation project in the area, and during the winters he worked at the Empress Hotel as a bartender. They moved back to the family farm in 1957, renting Mel’s quarter and farming one of their own. Their family of three children followed shortly afterwards. Elmer remained on the farm until January 2014, when his failing health resulted in a move to Chateau Providence in St. Brieux.
Elmer had many passions. Family was first, and he took great delight in spending time playing with his children and later his grandchildren. He loved farming, golfing, baseball, and playing hockey with the Melfort Hawks and the Old Roosters. He was a huge fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Blue Jays. Many of his days were spent in his shop where he worked on projects or repaired his machinery. He could fix almost anything, and neighbours were always at the farm getting him to weld or fabricate custom equipment for them. Elmer served on the executive of the Pleasant Valley Community Club in various capacities. He was a councillor for the RM of Flett’s Springs for 16 years, from 1989 to 2004. He also was a board member for the Flett’s Springs Conservation and Development Area Authority for 30 years, from 1980 to 2010.
Elmer was predeceased by his loving wife Nada, his parents, Mel and Pearl, and two of his siblings, Arthur and Cecil.
He is survived by his daughter Arnelda (Dale) Lawrence and their daughters Amanda, Jamie, and Ashley; daughter Eleanor (Glen) McIvor and their twins Brett and Breanne; son Brock (Barb) and their children Dawson, Duston, and Jocelyn (Jon) Schmitt and their children Madison, Mackenzie, and Sadie; and his sister Helen Hopewell.
