Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Harvey Degerness announces his passing on June 30, 2019 at the age of 86 years. Dad was born on May 8, 1933 on the family farm near Fairy Glen, Sask. He was the 10th child born of 12 to Henry and Annie Degerness. He took his schooling in Fairy Glen, most often making the trip on foot across the field. Dad was always a hard worker. Harvey met his wife Joan and on March 8, 1962 they were married. Together they built a good life, home and family, sharing almost 47 years together before Mom’s passing in 2009. In the 50’s, He started his working career in the Logging Industry in Revelstoke, BC. When he returned to the Melfort area in the 60’s, he tried his hand at Auto Mechanics with Miskey Tire & Battery. Harvey started with the Melfort School Division in 1967, until he retired in 1997 after 30 years of service. He worked a long side of wife Joan for 21 of those 30 years. Affectionately known as “Mr & Mrs D”.
After Mom’s passing in 2009, Dad remained in his own home. With the constant loving care from his children and the wonderful neighbors that he had, they made it possible for him to remain in his home. For many years he enjoyed doing for others, his knees would no longer allow him to do all that he loved to. In our hearts we know that the neighbors were returning the kindness that he showed them, for so many years.
Left to cherish his memory, David (Kelly), Betty Ann (Richard), George (Connie), Suann (Barry), Ricki (Tanya), and Lana and 9 grandchildren (Stephanie, Melanie, Stephen, Shauna, Michael, Stewart, Jeshua, Miranda and Matthew): and 9 great grandchildren, (Riley, Stephanie, Parker, Ellory, Faith, Hope, Jacob, Elliott and Emilia) as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Thanks so much to Dr’s Strydom & Levendall, and the amazing nurses and support staff at the Melfort Union Hospital who cared for Dad during his stay there. Also to all the neighbours, friends, and family for the gifts of flowers, food, phone calls and visits. Your kindness was very much appreciated by all of us.
Memorial contributions in memory of Harvey may be directed to the Carrot River Valley Lutheran Church
