Velma May Groat was born on the family farm on August the 11th, 1924, second daughter of Roy and Marjorie (Olsen) Groat. Velma started public school at Ethelton. In the fall of 1931 the family moved to Saskatoon where she attended Mayfair School until 1938 when the family moved back to the farm. She returned to Saskatoon to attend Business College upon completion of her course she returned to Ethelton and for a time worked at Groat’s Garage in Melfort. On December 21, 1944, Bill Campbell had returned from overseas and soon love started to bloom. They were married on June 12, 1946 in the Flett’s Spring Church. For two years they worked as a married couple while looking for land to purchase to start farming on their own. In the fall of 1947 the east half of the west half and west half of the east half section 16 W2 was theirs. This would be their home for the next twenty seven years. Velma was involved in the Ethelton community. She was a member of the Ethelton Homemakers, U.C.W., taught Sunday school, curling club, she also organized a community Christmas concert. Bill & Velma loved square dancing and were members of the 44 trail Square Dance Club. Together they had two children William Owen (stillborn) on July 19, 1951 and Darlene Mae April 19, 1952. After Bill’s brother Frank left farming Velma became the truck driver at harvest, she was always the go for gal in spring and fall. After selling the farm and moving to Melfort she worked at Bell’s Style Shop. She and Bill also became cook and assistant on oil rigs in Alberta and B.C. for a few winters. Velma loved to travel, the family made several trips to Alberta and B.C. to visit family. They also traveled to England & Norway, Scotland. She enjoyed going to the cabin at candle lake, golfing, swimming and curling. She was very proud of the fact that she skipped her team through the ladies bonspiel undefeated. Velma also wrote poems, songs and music, some which was recorded and she wrote and published auto biography “Life in the Country, the City and Town.” Velma & Darlene were deeply saddened when Bill passed away Feb. 21, 1993. After years of lonliness she and Vern Johansen were married June 28, 1995. This was a short interlude as Vern died of Lung Cancer May 25, 1996. Velma met Cyril Lacey through Eastern Star, they were married Aug. 14, 1998 and were together until 2011 when due to failing health Cyril moved to Moose Jaw to be close to family. Velma moved to Diefenbaker Place until 2014 when she became a resident of Chateau Providence Care Home in St. Brieux. Velma leaves to mourn her daughter Darlene, Tom (Pat) Hindley, Stewart (Yvonne) Hindley borrowed sons. Borrowed grandchildren Everett (Anita) Hindley, Melissa (Sabastian) and Elizabeth, Erica Hindley, Taylor Hindley. Lorna & Walter Johanson Garcia, Verna & Peter Gallen and family, Eric & Jeanette Johnson and family, Stephen & Dawn Lacey and family, Nigel & Collette Lacey and family. Sister Phyllis Ford, brother Edward (Jean) Groat, sisters-in-law June Groat, Rose Smith, Margaret (Art) Smith. Brothers-in-law Frank (Gwenn) Campbell, Edgar (Ethel) Campbell, Ernest (Merle) Campbell. Numerous nieces, nephews and other loved ones. She was predeceased by her parents Roy & Marjorie Groat, brothers Clark, & Gordon Groat, stillborn son William Owen. Husbands Bill Campbell, Vern Johansen and Cyril Lacey. Brother-in-laws Jim Smith & Harvey Ford. Sister Effie (Walter) Hindley nieces Margaret (Glen) Myrheim, Patsy Ravndahl, and nephew Bradley Groat and Peter Lacey.
