Obituary
Ellen Elvira Wehrkamp, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully with family surrounding her on Monday, August 9, 2021 at the age of 86 years.
Ellen was born May 20, 1935 in the farm home with Grandma Eva Flodell as midwife, the youngest of four children born to Fred and Julia Flodell.
At age seven, Mom attended Creek Hill School for seven years, skipping grade 3.
Mom’s fondest memories growing up on the farm were going up to the pines picking blueberries with family and sliding down the barn roof in winter months was fun even if there was a chance of getting some slivers on your behind.
At age 15, Mom entered the workforce obtaining her first job at Waskesiu and also held various employment including odd housework jobs, and working at Ernie Fields Store in Kinistino. During these independent working years, Mom would meet a tall and handsome young man from the Bagley district, and on June 30, 1952 they would have their first date. One year later, on June 30, 1953, they were married at Bethesda Church. They were blessed with three children: Randall Gordon, Shirley Ann, and Larry Leroy.
Those early years for Mom and Dad were spent living in Melfort, Moose Jaw and Saskatoon while Dad worked at various jobs. Eventually they moved home to the Wehrkamp farm.
Mom was a stay-at-home mom until 1975 (although she was known as the community “Avon Lady”) and then started working at Coop Fine Fashion and Furniture as clerk and cashier for 25 years.
Mom loved family gatherings, and they were very important to her. Birthdays were celebrated not only with a delicious cake and party but a delicious family supper. The same went for Christmas and all holidays.
Mom’s talents were many: growing a garden tended with love that could feed an army lovingly shared with us all. She was a wonderful cook, making pault, creamed chicken, Christmas pudding, torte cakes, thin bread and various Swedish treats. Come to think of it, everything she made was top notch and delicious.
She was a devoted hockey mom, always cheering for her boys and the best 4-H mom in all 4-H events and Melfort Fair when we had our horses. Later years it was supporting the grandkids, be it hockey, volleyball, dance, football, basketball or ice carnivals.
Mom and Dad enjoyed travelling: Hostfest in Minot, bringing home Scandinavian treasures for us all; Waskesiu trips staying at Baker’s Cabins; a memorable trip to Cuba; travels across many USA states, Arizona being Mom’s favourite.
In January of 2006, they moved to Melfort to begin full-time retirement in their condo. After Dad’s passing, Mom enjoyed times with family, road trips, reading the daily Star Phoenix with a cup of instant Folgers coffee, word search, and watching curling and western movies, a bowl of peppermints or chocolate-covered peanuts at her side. Mom was so thankful to be able to enjoy independent life in her home until she was hospitalized.
Ellen was predeceased by her parents, Fred and Julia Flodell; her in-laws Ben and Alma Wehrkamp, her loving husband of 59 years – Einar, brothers Ed (Anne) Flodell and Roy Flodell, Virginia Larson, sister Doreen Thomsen/Block and Eric Thomsen.
Ellen is survived by son Randy (Anna), daughter Shirley (Doug Folden) and son Larry (Mary); grandchildren Brenden (Lisa), children Olivia and Luke, Garrett (Rikki) daughter Munroe, and Alicia (Alex); Amy (Dave) Krieger, children Chloe (Shandon), Brooklyn, twins Camden and Dutch, Ethan and Evan, Craig (Lisa), Alexa and Callen, Trevor (Ashley) children Asher and Nate, Brandon (Jade) daughter Bobby Folden and Cassandra (Darren) Christianson; Danielle (Cole), Justin and Nathan Wehrkamp.
She also leaves to mourn her step-brother Bill Flodell (Marlene), as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
