Obituary
Thérèse began her life on December 13, 1923 in Cardinal, Manitoba. She died on February 23, 2022 in Melfort, Saskatchewan.
She was the 11th and last child born to Marius and Marie (Tupin) Assié.
In September 1927, she moved with her parents, 2 sisters and 7 brothers to their farm in the Miora Lake community, located 10
miles southwest of St. Brieux. Thérèse treasured her happy childhood memories of a loving family and Sunday dinners gathered
around the dining table with her sisters and brothers. Throughout her life she would remain closely connected to her extended
family.
Thérèse completed grade 8 in the one-room schoolhouse (Miora Lake), then grades 9 and 10 by correspondence. Although her
formal education may have ended then, she began a lifetime of self-education especially enjoying history and current events.
Thérèse grew up during the “dirty thirties” and learned the art of repurposing and recycling- something she never forgot.
On August 6, 1946 Thérèse married Adrien Fagnou. They lived in Pathlow close to her sister Marie (John Fagnou) for 3 years. In
1949 they moved to the Fagnou farm 3 1/2 miles northeast of Pathlow where they became members of the Percieville school
district. She and Adrien raised a family of 3 sons and 2 daughters.
Thérèse worked full-time on the farm until 1977 when she became the postmaster in Pathlow, a job she enjoyed immensely until
compulsory retirement at age 65. This work allowed her to better know the people of Pathlow and their history. She enjoyed
curling with the Pathlow ladies and participated in local bonspiels. The family was part of the St Augustine Mission Parish in
Pathlow, as well as members of the St Brieux Parish. Thérèse was always an active member of the Pathlow Catholic Ladies’ Aid.
Thérèse and Adrien did some travelling, including a memorable trip to France in May 1984. In 1995 they visited Ottawa,
Montreal, and Québec City with their son Dennis. They also enjoyed many road trips to visit extended family.
Her hobbies included knitting, sewing, quilting, baking, gardening, reading and doing the word puzzles in the daily newspaper.
Thérèse loved to read and keep abreast of the daily news giving her a well formed opinion about the days’ happenings. In March
1990, she and Adrien moved to Melfort where they continued bowling with other Pathlow retirees. The move to Melfort also
allowed them to attend daily mass, something they had not been able to do while on the farm. Thérèse served on the altar society
for many years and was a member of the CWL of Our Lady of Consolation Parish in Melfort.
We fondly remember that throughout the year she brought her family together for roast chicken dinner after Sunday mass and for
special occasions - Easter, Christmas and New Years.
Among Thérèse’s many virtues, the one that endeared her most to those who knew her, was the gift of being present to the other.
With this gift she created a special connection to each of her grandchildren. She was always happy to pause what she was doing
and take time to bake cupcakes, make play dough, or enjoy a board game with them.
In October 2015, Thérèse moved to Nirvana Assisted Living in Melfort. In August 2020, Thérèse became a resident of Parkland
Place.
Thérèse is survived by her children and grandchildren: Gilbert (Gwen), Renée (Mark), Yolande (Dwayne), John (Patricia); Anne
Marie (Brian), Jeff, Adrienne (Sean); Dennis (Marie), André (Michelle), Matthew (Kara); Lorraine, Jocelyn (Dave), Evan
(Nicole), Joel; Lionel (Bettylou), Nicholas, Michelle (Evan), and 14 great grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her husband, Adrien (2007) and her grandson, Graham (2017) and her 10 siblings.
Memorial contributions in memory of Thérèse may be made to the Chateau Providence Auxiliary and/or the St. Brieux R.C. Cemetery Fund.
