Robert Edward Henning was born on February 16, 1925 on the family farm in Resource, Saskatchewan. He passed away peacefully, with his family by his side on July 18, 2019 at the age of 94. Robert was the oldest child of seven, born to Bert and Mary Henning. During his childhood he spent many years at his grandparent’s farm, Edward Andrew and Christina Katherine Cottrill. Robert married the love of his life Marjorie Thompson on October 24, 1945. Their life was fulfilled when their son, Lorne, was born on February 23, 1952. Lorne married Cathye and they have three children Brett, Garrett and Marissa who were the light of Robert’s life. Robert worked at the Melfort Research Station for 33 years, where he made lifelong friends. Robert spent Lorne’s childhood years coaching his hockey team, the Melfort Legion, and ball team, Resource Cardinals. He won countless coach of the year awards and had a positive impact on many throughout the years. Robert and Marj took immense pride in Lorne’s junior and NHL hockey careers, spending a great deal of time traveling to watch him play and coach. They cheered him on to four Stanley Cups with the New York Islanders and with his professional career in coaching and management. Robert proudly wore the 1980 cup ring for the rest of his life. Robert spent most of his later days at the hockey rink, curling rink, and golf course, always keeping active and busy, as well as traveling to the States to see Lorne, Cathye and the kids. Robert enjoyed watching his many nieces and nephews play hockey and ball games and was incredibly proud of their achievements. He was affectionately known as Uncle Robert to many. He would never say goodbye without a “love you dear”. Left to cherish his memory are his son Lorne and wife, Cathye, grandchildren, Brett (Meghan), Garrett and Marissa (Simon), great grandchildren; Brooks, Teddy, Annabel, and Jack. Sisters; Phyllis MacGillivray, Teeny Pavey, Ida Freed, Marlene (Carson) Richardson, Eileen (Ralph) Nicholson as well as many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, their families and all of the many other people Robert held as his nearest and dearest. Robert was predeceased by his parents, beloved wife Marjorie, brother Marvin “Stub” Henning, and brothers-in-law Allan MacGillivray, Bud Pavey and Duane Freed.
