Obituary of Vern Carswell
Please share a memory of Vern to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Vern Carswell was born May 1, 1948 to George and Olive (Toots) Carswell of Melfort, Saskatchewan. He passed away on December 9, 2022 at the age of 74. After leaving school, Vern had a variety of work experiences. In 1970 he purchased his first truck and built a moving van on it, that started his long career in the moving business. In 1972 he formed Carswell Moving and Storage and from 1980 to 1993 he had a second moving company in partnership with his nephew, Cam Carswell. Vern served on the board of Allied Van Lines for eight years and made many friends of fellow Directors. In 1984, together with his life partner, Barb Smith, they became agents for Purolator Courier in Melfort and then in 1985 they opened Crunch Disposals. Vern was an astute businessman and he expanded the businesses in Melfort, Prince Albert and Saskatoon. Vern and Barb had a busy life which was really enriched when they got “the love of their life”, a Bichon Frise puppy named Chico. The three then spent many winters together in Florida, first in Key West and then in Homestead. Summers in Melfort and winters in Florida, life was good. But things changed and Vern’s health mandated that they stay permanently in Canada. Vern dealt with many health issues but was still active until the last couple of months before his passing. He had his regular coffee buddies to keep him entertained, and he had his beloved Chico to accompany him as he made his rounds around town, checking everything out. He and Barb had good friends to socialize with and both really enjoyed their condo home. For Vern, growing up and staying in Melfort proved to be good. This “hometown boy” will be missed.
Vern is survived by his wife, Barbara Smith and sister, Joan Fleet and husband, Sam numerous nieces and nephews. Brother and sister-in-law Frank (Dian) Smith and their family Brad (Cindy) and Neil (April) Smith. A very special niece, Natalie (Colin) Doucette and family. Vern is also survived by two daughters by choice, Hali Long and Tracy Copeland.
