Obituary of Wilma Jane McKee

Wilma Jane McKee was born October 29th 1944 in Melfort, Saskatchewan and was the 3rd child of Richard Arthur Borden and Esther Lillian (Kyler) McKee . Wilma passed away peacefully, with family by her side, on Thursday, February 9th, 2023. She fought a short battle with cancer, remaining optimistic through it all, no matter who asked her how she was her response was always, “I’m fine and how are you?”.
“Win” did her early schooling, Grades 1 to 8, at Central Park School, a short distance from the McKee farm. It was soon discovered that she wasn’t much of a horse driver, as when Uncle Blair chose to walk home with a friend, making Win responsible for taking the horse home, however the horse got away! Wilma finished her schooling at MCCI in Melfort. She belonged to CGIT at the United Church which she attended for many years. While she was in high school, she also did a business school course. In the fall of 1962, she started her commercial course learning bookkeeping & typing which prepared her for her first job in 1963 as a secretary for Wes Aikenhead. Then in 1964 she began to work for Eatons, where she stayed for the next 11 years. In 1975 she started at Parkland Regional Care Centre where she worked for 33 years, retiring in 2008 to care for her mother.
Auntie Win was an extra-mother to the Walsh children as she moved in with Jack and Alretta soon after they were married. This helped them out a lot! It also gave Wilma a comfortable place to live when she was working in Melfort. Ginger, the Walsh’s dog, would meet Auntie Win at the United Church on her walk home from Parkland each day. Wilma was modestly fashionable- twice a week she would have her hair done and often had her nails done. Wilma helped out other families as she babysat the Yasinski Boys, the Hammer Boys and the Boe children when their parents went on holidays.
On November 13, 1973, Wilma joined Eastern Star. She was a very active, involved member. She was an honorary member of many chapters, she went to many Star events, including Grand Chapters, throughout Saskatchewan and the United States. In 2014, Wilma was the Worthy Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter of Saskatchewan. She loved her Star family and was very committed to the Order. Wilma loved being a part of organizing countless teas and fundraisers. She was often in charge of the money for these events, and made sure to balance the books to the penny by counting it at least 3 times!
Auntie Win spend many hours with her nieces and nephews, then great nieces and nephews, and most recently great-great nieces and nephews. Auntie Win always made time to chat with them, learning about their activities and lives. She was happy and jovial, always supportive and she insisted that she didn’t have favourites! Auntie Win enjoyed travelling and went on several trips such as Hawaii with her sister Opal, Mexico with a friend, and road and camping trips across Canada and the United States with her cousin Lyle. Often Auntie Wheez and one of the Walsh kids would go along on these adventures, and they would buy fresh fruit along the way, sometimes getting too many cherries! Win loved to go on tours to plays, concerts and always enjoyed a good shopping trip to Edmonton with Jack and Alretta to visit Jim and Rhonda. This fall Auntie Win made a couple trips with Shelley down to Regina to visit Shawn and the kids. She was happy to help decorate their house for Christmas. Speaking of Christmas, our trees will always hold memories of Win, as she made sure to thoughtfully order special ornaments for nieces, nephews, friends, hairdresser, manicurist & so on, each year. Auntie Win supported all her family and made sure to attend birthdays, baptisms, graduations, weddings, skating or hockey events, plays or garage sales. Auntie was always in the crowd, showing us she loved us. Win is going to be missed by many. We love you Win, may you Rest in Peace.
And He will raise you up on eagle's wings, Bear you on the breath of dawn, Make you to shine like the sun, And hold you in the palm of His Hand.
