Obituary of Lillian Palma Hopkins

Lillian was born on November 11, 1929 to Mathias and Mary Sather on the family farm, 12 miles north of Melfort. She was the middle child, the only girl. She attended Dover school until Grade 8 when she stayed home to help her mother. She worked hard, milking cows on their dairy farm, hauling cream to the creamery, gardening and helping her mother with laundry and cooking. She enjoyed large family gatherings with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She attended Luther League at the CRVL church.
Mom worked as a Nurses Aide at the Melfort Union Hospital for several years, a job she took great pride in. At that time she lives at the Melfort Nurses Residence.
Mom met the love of her life, Charlie Hopkins, at the Melfort Creamery. They wed on November 3, 1954 at the CRVL church. Mom then become a happy homemaker and mother of three children. Mom and dad farmed 3 miles north of Melfort, eventually moving one mile east to their own farmyard. Mom thrived on being a wonderful mother, daughter and daughter-in-law. She was selfless and helped those near and dear to her heart. She was an active member of the Stoney Creek Community Club, serving many roles on the committee. Mom grew a large vegetable garden and loved her flowers, a trait she passed onto her daughters. Mom had an affinity for knitting afghans whether it was a wedding gift, baby gift, grad gift or a donation. One day we tallied the afghans and it was upwards of 80. Mom and dad enjoyed many years of old time dancing, travelling near and far and making many new friends. She had a wide circle of friends, childhood friends from the Fairy Glen and Bagley district, Melfort United Church and numerous friends she made in the Stoney Creek area.
Lillian will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 68 years, Charlie. Her children, Rita (Gordon) Garinger and their children, Erin Small and her children, Luke, Ethan, Emma & Aleaha; Ryan (Yai) Garinger and their children, Nixon & Ellie; Beth (Keith) Boyle and their children, Robert (Tessa) and their children, Aria & Nova; Christine (Cam) Matus and their son, Beau; and son Andrew (Robyn), John (Jack) and his daughters, Lorissa, Jamie and Jen. Lillian is also survived by her sister-in-law, Dianne Sather, and special friend, Melody Hopkins.
Lillian was predeceased by her parents, her two brothers Manfred and Stanley and her brother-in-law, Jim Hopkins.
