Obituary of Bertha Hermus

Please share a memory of Bertha to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sorrow that the family of Hubertha Cornelia Hermus (Bertha), announce her passing on August 4, 2024 at Chateau Providence in St. Brieux. Bertha was born the third of eight children to Henry and Maria Honing in Wychen the Netherlands. Bertha worked as a home care aid before immigrating to Canada with her family in March of 1949. After living through WW2, they left for Canada on the ship Scythia from Le Havre, France.  On the boat, Mom met a young man named Jim Hermus who was also immigrating to Canada with his friend Jim Wyne.  Her family settled in the Cudworth area where her first job was for the local doctor. Mom and Dad reconnected after a short time in Canada and were married on August 21, 1951. They moved to the Melfort area where they raised 7 children on a mixed farm. Our Mom was a quiet soul, but we always knew when she meant business. Together Dad and Mom were our inspiration, mentors and taught us spiritual guidance. Resilience best describes their journey in life. New country, new language and endless hard work. It seemed there was very little she could NOT do. Her unending strength and perseverance to raise our family and to establish the family farm with Dad made it all possible. Mom was predeceased by our father Jim in January of 2012. As always, Mom faced life ahead with a quiet resolve, but she always had that twinkle in her eye and a smile that could light up a room! Mom was also predeceased by her parents, Henry and Maria Honing, an infant sister Maria, siblings Annie, Corrie, Herman, John, Hank, Mike and grandson Johnathan Elligott. Mom is survived by one sister, Mena Lieffers of Cudworth Sask. Mom’s children and their families: Ted Hermus, Bernie (Joan)Hermus, Mary (Curt) Paquin, Peggy (Barry)Gordon, Joanne Hermus, Jeanette (Ron) Kostiuk and Dennis (Leizel) Hermus. Mom is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
