Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Lorna Gavin Porter on September 3, 2021, at the age of 99, (just 9 days short of her 100th birthday) where she was residing in her home at the Jubilee Lodge in Kinistino, SK.
Lorna was born on September 12, 1921 to Robert & Annie Forsyth. She was the second child born into a family of eight. She had very fond memories of her Dad, Mom, and family growing up on the farm.
After a few years of being a domestic helper for some neighbours, when she was 15, she got a job at the privately owned Kinistino Hospital as laundress and cook’s helper. She then moved to Prince Albert where she first worked for a Presbyterian Minister. However, it was always a dream of Lorna’s to work for the Singer Sewing Machine Company, and just three short months later she was very pleased to get a job there as bookkeeper and sales lady. It was there that she learnt the skills that she used later on when she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force.
When Lorna was 17, she met Jack Porter. However, the war got between them and their wedding day. Lorna joined the W.D. of the Royal Canadian Air Force in August 1942. This was one of her proudest accomplishments. Once the war ended, and after four long years of not seeing each other, Lorna and Jack were married on September 12, 1946 at St. Albans Cathedral in Prince Albert. They purchased the John Robertson farm, and that is where they raised their three children; Linda was born in 1947, Gwen in 1950 and Gerald in 1953.
At age 45, Lorna was employed as a Nursing Attendant at Parkland Care Center in Melfort. In later years, Lorna spent a lot of time reflecting on her life and documenting decades of history from a time we never knew. She wrote many stories about her ancestors, what life was like growing up, life in the R.C.A.F. and history of her hometown. These memories will be cherished by her family for many generations to come.
For the past several years, Lorna had been residing at the Jubilee Lodge in Kinistino. She spoke very highly of the staff there and was very blessed to be in a place where they took such good care of her.
Lorna is predeceased by her husband: Jack; her parents: Robert Drummond and Annie Evelyn Forsyth; her siblings: Peggy (Bob) Weatherby, Kathleen Forsyth, Betty (Ted) King, Jack (Leona) Forsyth, Helen (Bernie) Hodgson, Dolly Beaulieu and Janet (Tony) Kormish; her father in law and mother in law: Fisher & Ellen Porter; brother in laws: Bill (Pauline), Dick (Ruth), Rae, Fred (Velma), Bob, Maurice.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Linda Porter (Cecil Armsden), Gwen (Larry) Haas, and Gerald (Barb) Porter; her grandchildren: Wade Whalen (Rachael Ward), Coralie Flodell, Dwayne Flodell (Brandy Thompson), Jolene (Craig) Trennaman, Kirk (Corri) Haas, Todd (Renee) Haas, Chad (Jennifer) Haas, Mike (Carrie) Porter, Allison Porter as well as 20 great grandchildren and even some great great grandchildren; sister in laws: Irma Forsyth, Elsie Porter, Ruth Porter; brother in law: Francis Beaulieu.
